Phase inversion in two-phase solid systems driven by an elastic modulus mismatch

چکیده
We have used phase field simulations to study elastic stress driven phase inversion in which an initial microstructure with a minority phase embedded in a majority phase evolves to one in which the latter becomes embedded in the former. Such phase inversion is possible if the majority phase is elastically stiffer than the minority phase. For a given set of parameters (volume fraction and elastic moduli of the phases), phase inversion occurs at a characteristic microstructural length scale (`). Our results show that ` is lower for systems with larger mismatch in elastic moduli, and (to a smaller extent) in those with greater elastic anisotropy.

Experimental Investigation of Phase Inversion of Liquid-Liquid Systems in a Spray Extraction Column
An experimental study of the phase inversion behavior of liquid-liquid dispersion has been conducted in a spray extraction column for systems of toluene / water, n-hexane/water, CCl4/water, toluene /water + glycerol (25 % wt), toluene + CCl4 (25 % wt) / water and toluene / acetic acid (5 % wt)/water. The effects of physical properties, mass transfer and column geometry...
متن کاملAxial and Torsional Free Vibrations of Elastic Nano-Beams by Stress-Driven Two-Phase Elasticity
Size-dependent longitudinal and torsional vibrations of nano-beams are examined by two-phase mixture integral elasticity. A new and efficient elastodynamic model is conceived by convexly combining the local phase with strain- and stress-driven purely nonlocal phases. The proposed stress-driven nonlocal integral mixture leads to well-posed structural problems for any value of the scale parameter...

In this work, a new mathematical model of thermoelasticity theory has been considered in the context of a new consideration of heat conduction with fractional order theory. A functionally graded isotropic unbounded medium is considered subjected to a periodically varying heat source in the context of space-time non-local generalization of three-phase-lag thermoelastic model and Green-Naghdi mod...
متن کاملMechanical Resonance Dispersion Revisited
Mechanical resonance dispersion is the inelastic response of a solid to a periodic shear stress. Instead of the elastic Young's Modulus, the phenomenon is described by both a real J', and an imaginary J'' component of complex shear compliance, corresponding to in phase and out of phase strain responses, respectively. The experimental results are plots of J' and J'' vs. frequency, which are typi...
متن کاملThe Relaxation of Two-well Energies with Possibly Unequal Moduli
The elastic energy of a multiphase solid is a function of its microstructure. Determining the infimum of the energy of such a solid and characterizing the associated optimal microstructures is an important problem that arises in the modeling of the shape memory effect, microstructure evolution, and optimal design. Mathematically, the problem is to determine the relaxation under fixed phase frac...
